Hernia repair in Los Angeles
Common types of abdominal wall hernia, when repair is recommended and how open, laparoscopic and robotic approaches differ.
If you think you are having a medical emergency, call 911 now. Do not use this form for urgent symptoms.
What it is
A hernia is a weak spot or opening in the abdominal wall that lets tissue bulge through. Common types are inguinal (groin), umbilical (belly button), incisional (at a prior surgical scar) and ventral hernias. Repair closes the opening, usually reinforcing it with surgical mesh. It can be done through an open incision, laparoscopically or with robotic assistance.
Who may qualify
Hernias that cause pain, grow, or interfere with daily life are commonly repaired. Some small, minimally symptomatic inguinal hernias in men can be watched. A hernia that becomes hard, very painful, discolored, or comes with vomiting or inability to pass gas is an emergency: call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
What recovery can look like
Most repairs are outpatient. Many people resume light activity within days and avoid heavy lifting for several weeks. Your surgeon will give specific limits.
Risks to understand
Risks include bleeding, infection, pain that lasts, injury to nearby structures, problems related to mesh and recurrence of the hernia. Results vary and nothing is guaranteed.
Insurance and questions to ask
Ask your insurer whether repair needs prior authorization, whether the approach (open, laparoscopic or robotic) affects coverage and whether the facility and surgeon are in network.
